Google Business Profile: The 10-Minute Setup That Gets You Found Locally

Your Google Business Profile is free real estate at the top of search results. Most businesses set it up wrong — here's how to do it right.

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most powerful free marketing tool available to local businesses. Yet most businesses either haven't claimed theirs or have it half-finished. Here's how to do it right in 10 minutes.

Step 1: Claim Your Profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it already exists (Google auto-creates listings), claim it. If not, create one from scratch.

Google will verify you via postcard, phone, or video. The postcard method takes 1-2 weeks but works for everyone.

Step 2: Fill Out Everything

Google rewards completeness. Don't skip any fields:

  • **Business name:** Use your exact legal business name. No keyword stuffing.
  • **Categories:** Choose your primary category carefully — it's the most important field. Add secondary categories too.
  • **Hours:** Keep these accurate and update them for holidays.
  • **Description:** Write 250 natural words about what you do and who you serve. Include your city name naturally.
  • **Phone & website:** Must match what's on your website exactly.
  • Step 3: Add Photos (This is Huge)

Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks. Upload:

  • Your storefront (exterior)
  • Inside your space
  • Your team at work
  • Your products or completed projects
  • Aim for at least 10 photos. Add new ones monthly.

    Step 4: Enable Messaging

Turn on the messaging feature so customers can text you directly from Google. Many people prefer texting to calling. Don't leave this off.

Step 5: Build a Review System

After completing a job, send customers this: "Hey [name], really appreciate your business! If you have 2 minutes, would you mind leaving us a Google review? Here's the direct link: [your review link]"

Get your review link from your GBP dashboard under "Get more reviews."

    The Ongoing Part

Check your GBP weekly. Respond to every review. Post updates monthly. Google rewards active profiles with higher rankings. This is free marketing — treat it like it matters.
